Helping People Resolve Their Disagreements
with Reality
"My
life has no purpose, no direction,
no
aim, no meaning, and yet I'm happy.
I can't figure it out. What am I doing right?
- Charles Schulz"
Imagine the kind of happiness Charles Shulz
had. What does it take for us to take charge of our lives
and create that kind of happiness? It
takes replacing old ways of being (thinking, behaving and
environment) with new ones. It's
not just the internal, neither is it just the external.
Most of us have tried to make changes in our lives and have
struggled to sustain them. In my case, I'd been through
therapy, 12-steps (Co-Dependence Anonymous), visited different
religious groups, had coaches, learned powerful communcation
and mental techniques; all to help me get back on track.
And the bottom line became implementing what I know.
An example of what I've found can be related to weight
loss.
People try to lose weight and many of them succeed (for
short periods of time) then they gain the weight back,
and some even gain extra weight. So they are not
where they were; they weigh even more and feel worse about
themselves.
Many of the ways of trying to lose weight center on behavior:
changing diet and/or exercise. Others try environmental
change; say, getting a job on the 5th floor of a building
so we have to walk up and down stairs.
Yet, when those are taken away, we return to our old behaviors.
This is because we've left out the critical third part.
Our thinking. We've learned thinking about
food, exercise, the world and ourselves that creates behaviors
that make us gain weight.
Exercise is too hard.
I've gained so much, it'll
be that much harder to lose the weight.
It'll take
6 months to lose.
What's the use? I'll just gain
it back.
One more bite won't hurt. I've
been good all week.
Life is too difficult, I
deserve to indulge.
All these thoughts serve to keep us in a place we don't
want to be, and until we restore ourselves to healthy thinking,
we will continue to behave in unhealthy ways.
So, I work with people using these tools Ive learned,
to help them live more fulfilling lives by getting clarity
on what they want and changing their thinking to achieve
it.
I use Nonviolent
Communication, The
Work of Byron Katie, and Thought Process Management
of Human
Excellence as my primary tools in my toolbox.
